Prescription drug abuse is on the rise, and with plenty of high profile deaths attributed to prescription drugs (Brittany Murphy, Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger to name but a few).

Why is use on the rise? Some users think that prescription drugs are safer and less addictive or even less illegal. Prescription drugs are often more accessible in the home.

There are 3 types of drugs that are the most commonly abused:

• Opioids, which are most often prescribed to treat pain;
• CNS depressants, which are used to treat anxiety and sleep disorders;
• Stimulants, which are prescribed to treat the sleep disorder narcolepsy, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and obesity.

If you think you have a problem, there are a number of services in your local area, along with some national agencies you can contact no matter where you live. Some are not available to everyone. They might be specific to a certain age group, or require a referral from a GP or health professional.
