Amyl Nitrate / Poppers

AKA: Butyl Nitrite, Isobutyl Nitrite, Kix, Liquid Gold, Ram, rock Hard, Thrust

substance-misuseAmyl Nitrate more commonly known as poppers is sold in small bottles and is a liquid chemical called alkyl nitrites. When sniffed from the bottle the fumes of this chemical will deliver an immediate but short lived high. They do this by dilating the blood vessels and allowing more blood to the heart.

Poppers are commonly used in conjunction with other drugs to increase the high and are usually sold in sex clubs, gay bars and clubs.


Effects of Amyl Nitrate

  • Poppers when sniffed from the bottle with give you a short intense high which feels like a strong head rush. Your heart will race and you may feel quite giggly.
  • Often used as a sex aid, poppers can increase your orgasm, relax your sphincter muscles and potentially increase prolong your erection.
  • These effects will last approximately a couple of minutes.

Poppers are not considered physically or psychologically addictive.

Amyl Nitrate is not considered illegal however it is controlled under the Medicines Act. Possession may not end you up in jail but supply can be an offence.

How Amyl Nitrate is used

Amyl Nitrate or poppers is a liquid chemical that comes in a bottle. Once this bottle is opened the fumes of the chemical are quickly inhaled.

Since poppers come in a bottle it is possible that another liquid could be substituted, however reports of this are few and far between

Side Effects / Health Risks of Amyl Nitrate

  • Poppers can give you a severe and long lasting headache
  • Some men have found it difficult to maintain an erection after sniffing a lot of poppers
  • Nausea and faintness are a common side effect.
  • Poppers are highly flammable which make the common practice of dipping your cigarette in the chemical and then lighting it quite a dangerous choice!
  • Poppers can cause your blood pressure to drop. This potentially very dangerous if you are taking medication to reduce your blood pressure (or taking viagra)
  • Poppers can burn your skin on contact
  • Poppers are definitely not advised for anyone with chest or heart problems, anaemia or glaucoma.

Poppers are often taken alongside other illegal drugs as the intense head rush and increase in blood enhances the effects of other substances. However using poppers with other drugs will increase the risky side effects that these substances are already known for. Poppers on their own are already very dangerous for people with heart problems and low blood pressure. Used in conjunction with other highs, this risk can seriously increase.

Amyl Nitrate overdose

Although there is no risk of overdose with Poppers, when taken in conjunction with other drugs, Amyl nitrate can have negative effects increasing the risk of serious harm.

It is unlikely that you will experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop using poppers on a regular basis.
