substance-misuseThe 2009/10 British Crime Survey estimates that 8.6% of 16 to 59 year olds living in England and Wales have tried illegal drugs in the last year.

Among young people, this figure is more than twice as high, with an estimated 20% of 16 to 24 year olds having used illegal drugs in the last year.

For the people who take them, illegal drugs can be a serious problem. They’re responsible for between 1,300 and 1,600 deaths a year in the UK, and destroy thousands of relationships, families and careers.

According to the 2009/10 British Crime Survey, the most commonly used drugs in the UK are:

  1. Cannabis
  2. Powder cocaine
  3. Ecstasy
  4. Amyl nitrite and amphetamine
  5. Hallucinogens and ketamine

If you need help and support, a good place to start is with your GP. You may need a professional to assess the nature of your problems and help you to choose the appropriate treatment.

There are also drugs services in your local area, along with some national agencies who you can contact no matter where you live. Some are not available to everyone.

They might be specific to a certain age group, or require a referral from a GP or health professional.

Search for drugs professionals and support networks in your postcode area by using the Drugs Help Section on the Talk to Frank website. substance-misuse
